Let’s take a closer look at the Outlook Express. This was a light version of the full Microsoft Outlook program. Rather than converting the message files into a database file like most of the sophisticated email clients Outlook express keeps the individual messages in a folder. Due to this reason, the backup and restore processes are quite complex. Since the files are not compressed into one single database file, backup files occupy more space.

First we will discuss how to copy messages to a backup folder. In order to perform this task, first you need to locate the store folder and after that you need to copy the contents of the store folder. For performing this task, click Start, click Run, and press CTRL+V, and then click OK. Now click Select All on the Edit menu and then click Copy, and close the window.

Once the task of copying is done, create a backup folder to store these files. You can choose your preferred location on any drive and paste the contents of the store folder into the new backup folder. You are done. Now, if you want to export the Address Book to a .csv file, click Export, on the File menu, and then click Address Book. Then click Text File (Comma Separated Values), and then click Export. Click browse and choose the mail backup folder that you created. You can save the file name as address book backup. Click Next and click to select the check boxes that you want to export, and then click Finish and OK.

Let’s check how to Import messages from the backup folder. To perform this task, point to Import, on the File menu, and then click Messages. Click Microsoft Outlook Express 6, in the Select an e-mail program to import from box. After clicking Next click Import mail from an OE6 store directory, and then click OK. Browse for the mail backup folder that you have created and then click OK, and then click Next. Then click All folders, click Next, and then click Finish.

For importing the Address Book file you need to click Import, on the File menu. Click Other Address Book and click Text File (Comma Separated Values), and then click Import. By browsing select the mail backup folder where you saved the backup.csv file, and then click Open. Click Next, and click Finish. Then click OK, and then click Close.
